By the 1980’s the development of air filtration and enclosures to contain a process had developed to a high level of sophistication, driven predominantly by the electronics and pharmaceutical industries. However, a new era was opening up that until the late 1980’s was viewed with limited interest, and into this sector FEL offered their services. The industry was, of course, food manufacture and many of these companies were developing products which required a controlled environment to ensure product quality.
The roots of FEL go back to 1976 when air filtration and air movement systems were evolving – with newly developed raw materials for the clean room industry and nuclear containment use. Many other applications were developed using filters of HEPA design to suit industries such as gas turbine and the food manufacturing industry.
In 1994 FEL assisted in the development of the standard for air quality control in the UK working as part of a team based at CCFRA in Gloucestershire. The subsequent guidelines and associated technical work has given the food industry a practical document we can understand and apply for all air quality requirements in the food industry.
Air filtration standards are but a part of the overall picture of air quality control in the food industry, and FEL have developed a wide range of technical applications to ensure that food product containment is established and maintained.
Based in Sandbach, Cheshire, the company operates over sixty food-related technical contracts involved in service and evaluation of food processing environments. The projects department manage contracts that can include complete processing environment. However, the main area of work is to build and upgrade air quality systems.
