What contamination is in the air?

The air around us contains millions of small particles in every cubic metre of air. We can easily divide this contamination into settling and unsettling impurities, and present a range of airborne particulate in a visual format as illustrated below.

Particle diameter (micron)

To illustrate the relationship between count, area and weight of dust in air we can consider the following well-known work by Dr. Wiley.

A Sample of Atmospheric Air

Count curve: Measured with electron microscope

Area curve: Calculated

Weight curve: Solid section measured by sedimentation,
dotted section calculated.

Count = 99.95% < 1mm

Area = 80% < 1mm

Weight = 30% < 1mm

You will note that only a fraction of the dust by count – that quantity above one micron in size, accounts for the majority of the weight and dust in the air.
